Questrade Technologies Group (QTG) acts as the back-bone for Questrade. They act as strategic partners with each business unit to help Questrade leverage technology to gain competitive advantage. The team is comprised of very skilled, very committed individuals working collaboratively. They collectively create a unique work environment that is fast-paced and challenging, but also very open and supportive. So are they the serious, geeky-types? No way! Fun, freedom, flexibility is how QTG members describe the work culture here.

And where does the Front End Engineer fit into this?

As a key member of the QTG Web Application Design and Engineering team, the Front End Engineer will play a major role in the design and development of high performing and scalable web applications that meet business requirements.

What’s it like working as a Front End Engineer at Questrade?

In a nutshell, the Front End Engineer will see through the full software development life cycle at Questrade; from requirement-gathering, design and development, to implementation of both small and large-scale projects. You will collaborate with our user interface team, our back-end engineers, and other front-end engineers to design and develop functionally rich, robust, and user-friendly web and mobile applications, as defined by business requirements.

As the Front End Engineer, you will design, develop, and implement client-facing and internal web and mobile applications. You will be actively involved in designing new application features and functionality, writing API’s, and ensuring scalability as well as maintainability of improvements. You will use your extensive experience and expertise to support and evaluate a multi-tier environment, as well as to provide recommendations for additional infrastructure or software required to support the web application. You will also participate in the project architecture exercise and take ownership of ongoing project data architecture, and may be able to produce rapid prototypes for projects. You will provide support and enhancements to existing production applications in a timely and accurate manner, while ensuring consistency of design elements and interactive behaviours within individual pages/forms/components and across entire projects.

You won’t be doing this all alone of course! You will meet and interact with Questrade’s user-interface team, enterprise architects, back-end engineers and front-end engineers as needed in order to elicit, define, analyze and document requirements for new applications. Needless to say, you will go above and beyond by actively participating in defining and implementing best practices, standards and procedures, including quality and delivery methodologies. You will be key to ensuring the quality and reliability of code from intermediate developers by conducting smoke tests and code reviews. You will also demonstrate your team spirit by assisting and supporting your team members on multiple projects and support the Team lead in making technical decisions and development estimates. Throughout it all, you will also ensure compliance with the documented software processes and procedures throughout the life cycle of software products.

So are YOU our next Front End Engineer? You are if…

You gained your technical expertise through your degree, diploma, or equivalent and cemented it through a minimum of 3 years of experience in web-based and mobile technologies. As a result, you have hands-on experience and proficient knowledge of web technologies (such as HTML, CSS3, Java, JQuery, AngularJS, SASS and NodeJS), system environments (Windows and Mac OS X), and tools (MS Visual Studio 2008/2010, Subversion, JIRA), as well as a strong understanding of OOP programming and MVC architecture. You have experience with tools like JSPerf and JSFiddle for performance testing and prototyping, as well as a demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision. You have strong skills in browser-specific performance tuning optimization using DOM and Render Tree knowledge, Chrome DevTools debugging and profiling, V8 and/or other JavaScript engines internal modus operandi. You also have experience with unit testing frameworks, and a proven ability to analyze information in order to make appropriate recommendations. Your strong problem-solving and decision-making skills complement your ability to adapt to new business requirements and changes in the environment. Your positive attitude, commitment to the continuous development of your technical expertise, strong work ethic and service-oriented mindset, mean that you are willing to support the team in any way to ensure the project’s success. Although it’s not required, knowledge and understanding of the trading cycle, risk management and financial services is a bonus. Do you have experience with mobile development using PhoneGap (Cordova) or Objective-C for iOS and Java for Android? Even better!
